Linear vs. Evolving

bolt

Quick definition

A linear fragrance smells the same all day; an evolving one moves visibly through top, heart, and base over hours.

Linear fragrances smell roughly the same from spray to dry-down — they don't go through dramatic shifts. Many modern designer releases are linear (because consistency is what mass buyers want); ambroxan-heavy fragrances are especially linear-leaning. Evolving fragrances do the opposite: they unfold over hours, with new notes emerging as others fade. Classic chypres, animalic orientals, and old-school florals are often evolvers. Neither is better — but a $300 niche fragrance that smells the same all day might leave you disappointed, while a $40 designer that holds its character for 8 hours feels like a steal.
