Quick definition

Lab-made aroma chemicals — the majority of modern fragrance ingredients. Cleaner, safer, more consistent than naturals.

Almost every modern fragrance is built primarily from synthetic materials, not natural extracts. Synthetic doesn't mean inferior — many synthetics smell more like the natural reference than the natural extract itself does, because they're isolated to a single molecule. Iso E Super (woody, ambery), hedione (transparent jasmine), calone (marine), ambroxan (amber), and ethyl maltol (caramel-cotton-candy) are all synthetics that show up in most modern fragrances. The natural-vs-synthetic debate is largely a marketing construct — what matters is the perfumer's hand and the final composition, not the source material's origin.
