Clone (Dupe)

bolt

Quick definition

A fragrance designed to smell similar to an existing, usually more expensive, original. Common in Middle Eastern and budget designer brands.

A clone (also "dupe") is a fragrance that aims to recreate the olfactory experience of another, typically more expensive, original. Quality varies enormously — top-tier clones (Armaf's Aventus take, Lattafa's Khamrah-tier work, Maison Alhambra's flagship range) get within 70–90% of the original's character at 5–15% of the price. Lower-tier clones can smell cheap or only resemble the original briefly. Cloning is fully legal — fragrance formulas can't be copyrighted — but it's a controversial space in the community. Our Clone Lab lets community members map verified clones to originals; only those community-mapped pairs get the "Verified Clone" badge on /smells-like pages.
